Jamaica 1999

Brian and I vacationed in Jamaica the first week of March. We stayed at the lovely Breezes Golf and Beach Resort, Runaway Bay (about an hour outside of Montego Bay). The weather was beautiful, the beaches were relaxing, the food was decent, and the liquor was free (the cost of the trip being sunk...). We did it all - here's the proof:

First, Our Luxury Automobile

Our powerful Toyota Starlet 1.3L 4 Door! And yes, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car.

The Resort and the Beach

Some of the grounds around the resort. It was very nicely landscaped.

Ah...the lovebirds. This was the best part of the maid service. Every day, the maids would turn some of the towels into a miscellaneous creation. When we first arrived, they were set up as "lovebirds" - Jamaica's native symbol apparently...We also got shells, palms, and hearts.

Here is the Jamaican "love cobra"...uh, I mean love bird. The head got a bit flattened out.

Here we are at dinner on the beach terrace.

Here's Brian at one of the buffet stations. There was a lot of food. Alas, no perogies...

Casino night. Here we are at a blackjack table.

These palms were all over the resort. I thought they were neat.

Dunn's River Falls

Dunn's River Falls is a really neat series of terraced waterfalls leading down to a very nice beach. The whole area, which is about 10 minutes west of Ocho Rios, has a very tropical feel. The fun part about this particular tourist attraction is that once you get to the bottom, you have the option of walking back up to the top in (through?) the waterfalls. The pictures below are in rough chronological order (arriving at the park, walking down, the beach, walking back in the falls, leaving the park).

Brian standing near the entrance to the park. We didn't know what this sign meant...

Brian at the actual entrance to the park. We're preparing ourselves to run the gauntlet of vendors.

On the "dry" path alongside the falls. We're heading down towards the beach.

A view of the ocean along the path down.

Preparing for our next series of falls.

Probably my favorite picture. Under the falls before the last set.

On our way out of the park, Brian just had to take this picture of the woman in the floral print dress with the big pointy hat...oh wait. That's not a woman. Our first (and last) Jamaican drag queen!

The Green Grotto

Brian at the entrance to the Green Grotto. "Jamaica's most popular attraction"

David at the bottom pool of the grotto (of course, you can't really see the pool).

Brian in the area of the caves formerly used as a disco. Can you see the benches?

Random rocks

Brian radiating divine light...or, standing in a ray of sunlight coming through the crack in the cave roof. You decide.

Acrobatics (Who would have thought?)

Golfing

Brian putting. You can almost hear our caddy saying "tsk, tsk...".

Brian attempting to beat the ball into submission (terrible form, by the way)

Brian putting, with our caddy looking on disapprovingly.

Here we are at the beginning of our horrible golf adventure. I used to be good in high school. Really, I was...
